A student in Türkiye is facing prison after using a homebrew AI device to cheat on a test.
According to Reuters, this student was caught using the above device at a school in Isparta province, southwestern Türkiye, while taking the national basic aptitude test.
This is not the first time AI has been used to cheat on schoolwork. There have been many concerns about the use of AI, including the very popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, to cheat on homework, tests, and other tasks over the past few years.
However, this case is notable because the user of the homemade AI device was actually arrested, making the student one of the first to face a penalty for using the device. AI for cheating.
According to Turkish police involved in the arrest, this homemade device is actually somewhat complicated as it includes a camera button that the AI system can use to view the questions in the test. This information is then passed to an external support party before the answer is transferred back to the phone the student is using and transmitted to the headset the student is wearing.
The homemade AI device is powered by a small modem or router located in the student's shoe, the report said. Police say the student was only arrested after suspicious activity, which led to detention and a search before discovering the homemade device and its various components.
Another student was also arrested in connection with cheating, although details about the cheating committed by that student and the punishment he or she received have not yet been released.
With ChatGPT being able to pass law and business school exams, it's not surprising to see someone using it to try to pass their aptitude tests.
