Apple said it will comply with voluntary protections for US AI companies.
According to Reuters, Apple is the latest company to agree to join the artificial intelligence code of conduct along with other famous companies such as OpenAI, Amazon, Alphabet (Google), Meta, Microsoft. The US government said this is necessary to prevent any discrimination, security vulnerabilities or national security risks caused by AI in the future.
Accordingly, AI development companies must share the results of safety testing throughout the research process, reporting any vulnerabilities as soon as they are discovered. Government agencies coordinate to establish standards to ensure AI systems operate safely. The US Department of Commerce will develop guidance for companies on content authentication and labeling of AI-generated content.
The commitment comes after Apple launched its AI feature set Apple Intelligence as well as integrating ChatGPT into its Siri voice assistant in June.
Similar to many current generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Apple Intelligence has the ability to read, understand and create text, images and audio content. However, the difference comes from deep integration into the platform, directly supported on the device, helping AI understand the user's context, and being used anywhere instead of having to access a separate application.
Apple's feature set is only available to a limited number of famous journalists and technology bloggers for direct experience. The company plans to let ordinary users try it out on the Public Beta later this year. Supported devices include iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPad as well as Macs equipped with M1 chips or later.
Previously, on March 21, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution for the first time on protecting human rights, personal data and monitoring risks caused by artificial intelligence. The US-sponsored resolution, adopted by consensus of more than 120 member states without a vote, aims to promote safe, secure and trustworthy AI systems that benefit and promote sustainable development for the community. This is an initiative of governments around the world to shape the development of AI in the context of many countries' concerns that artificial intelligence is used to disrupt democratic processes, increase the risk of fraud, serious job losses and many other consequences.
