Billionaire Bill Gates is reportedly preparing to sell Breakthrough, the $645 million hydrogen-powered superyacht he owns but has never set foot on.
The 118.87-meter superyacht, built by Dutch shipbuilder Feadship in 2021 and launched three years later, is the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht. The environmentally friendly Breakthrough runs on "green" energy, emitting only water thanks to two 28-ton vacuum tanks of liquid hydrogen. The yacht is equipped with many amenities such as two large bedrooms, an infinity pool, a helipad, a spa, and a gym.
While neither Feadship nor Bill Gates have ever confirmed that he commissioned the superyacht, also known as Project 821, it is widely believed that the Microsoft co-founder owns it.
Jamie Edmiston, CEO of Edmiston, one of the world's leading superyacht brokerage and management firms, said Breakthrough is a game-changer for superyachts. Edmiston called it "the most extraordinary yacht ever built" and "the yacht that will change everything," according to Luxury Launches.
In addition to its luxurious bedrooms, the yacht also features multiple outdoor lounges, a giant spiral staircase, and a stunning observation deck at the front. The superyacht has a top speed of 17 knots (31.48 km/h) and can cross the Atlantic.
Breakthrough was originally put up for sale shortly after its launch in May 2024 for more than $600 million, according to The Sun. According to Luxury Launches, Bill Gates seems to be ready to part with this giant ship. Canadian billionaire and CEO of Green For Life Environmental, Patrick Dovigi, is said to be the buyer of Bill Gates' $645 million superyacht.
Patrick Dovigi is a former hockey star. After retiring from the sport, the former star, born in 1979, founded Green For Life Environmental Inc. in 2007. Patrick Dovigi's company quickly became one of the most profitable and reputable waste management companies in North America, with an estimated value of $18.62 billion by April 2025, according to Market Watch. Dovigi has an estimated net worth of $1 billion and is the 97th richest person in Canada.
The billionaire bought AHPO, a 370-foot, six-deck superyacht, from billionaire Michael Lee-Chin in 2023 for $362 million. However, he is selling it after less than two years of ownership, according to Luxury Launches.
The superyacht, which is on the market for 2022, features a two-story owner's suite, IMAX theater, Jacuzzi, sauna, massage room, and beauty salon. It is currently listed for sale by Edmiston and Moran Yacht & Ship for $370 million.
