Apple said iPhones using third-party screens and batteries will be better supported later this year.
Recently, Apple published a document highlighting the company's approach to repairability and device longevity. In the document, "Apple Defects" revealed that it will better support third-party screens and batteries on iPhones by the end of 2024.
First, Apple confirmed that the True Tone feature will work with third-party iPhone displays later this year:
"The True Tone feature requires precise calibration to function properly, and default calibration cannot be performed for third-party displays, which may result in unexpected behavior. For this reason, Apple has disabled the True Tone feature when using third-party displays but will enable all other display features for fuller support for third-party components starting later this year 2024, Apple will enable iPhone consumers to enable True Tone with third-party components for the best possible performance."
In addition, users can also turn off the True Tone feature in Settings if the screen does not work as desired.
True Tone is a feature that automatically adjusts the color of the screen to match the light in the environment.
Second, Apple said, battery health indicators such as maximum capacity and cycle count will work with third-party iPhone batteries that will be supported later this year:
"Currently, battery health metrics such as maximum capacity and cycle count are not displayed to consumers whose devices use third-party batteries. This is because Apple is unable to verify the authenticity of the battery. In fact, an internal Apple analysis found that some third-party batteries sold as new were actually used batteries, with battery health indicators being used. adjusted to look like new. In an effort to improve third-party battery support, starting in late 2024, Apple will display battery health indicators with a message stating that Apple cannot verify information is described."
In addition, Apple also said that third-party battery data is not guaranteed to be accurate.
It is expected that these changes will be rolled out with iOS 18 updates later this year. The specific time has not yet been mentioned by Apple.
