Former US President Donald Trump's account on Facebook and Instagram platforms had all restrictions removed after being locked in 2021.
Meta recently announced the restoration of all rights to use Donald Trump's social network account to "reflect the new status of the Republican presidential candidate".
"With upcoming party conventions, including the Republican convention next week, candidates for US President will soon be officially nominated," Meta's announcement said of the reason for the move. Latest. "In assessing our responsibility to permit political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear nominees for this position on the same basis."
Previously, Meta deleted former President Trump's entire account after the Capitol Hill riot on January 6, 2021. The company said he "seriously violated" Facebook and Instagram's community guidelines and standards by posting videos supporting those in the riots and calling them "great patriots."
Two years later, in January 2023, Meta restored Mr. Trump's accounts but applied stricter restrictions than regular accounts. The company's new move this weekend shows that the former president can now use social network accounts completely normally.
Twitter, currently X, also took action against Donald Trump when three of his tweets immediately after the riot were labeled inciting violence. His account was then locked and completely banned until billionaire Elon Musk bought the social networking platform.
After being banned from popular social networking platforms, the former president created a new social network, Truth Social, which was built to simulate X - his previous favorite platform. After the ban was eased, Mr. Trump still mainly used his private social network to make statements. After today's failed assassination attempt on July 14, he also spoke out to reassure his supporters on Truth Socia.
Truth Social was announced by Trump Media&Technology Group (TMTG) at the end of 2021. Before his account was locked, Donald Trump had 89 million followers on X and continuously used this social network to make comments or criticize opponents.
