Apple's latest A18 chip will likely be equipped on all four iPhone 16 models.
There are rumors that all four iPhone 16 models will use Apple's latest A18 chip, and now this information is further reinforced by new findings in Apple's source code, according to 9to5Mac.
According to changes in the backend source code names discovered by developer Nicolás Alvarez, indicating the presence of five new iPhone models. It's worth noting that this source code also mentions the A18 chip for all of these devices.
As explained by MacRumors, Apple's backend source code has revealed the identifiers for four upcoming iPhone models: iPhone17.1, iPhone17.2, iPhone17.3 and iPhone17.4.
Based on Apple's previous naming practices, the fact that all the codes start with the same number shows that all four devices use the A18 chip. The report explains that iPhones often associate the product identifier with the processor chip equipped inside. An example of the iPhone 15 lineup shows:
iPhone 15 has the code name iPhone 15.4 with A16 Bionic chip
iPhone 15 Plus has the code name iPhone 15.5 with A16 Bionic chip
iPhone 15 Pro has the code name iPhone 16.1 with A17 Pro chip
iPhone 15 Pro Max has the code name iPhone 16.2 with A17 Pro chip
It can be seen that the iPhone 15 series is branched based on the internal processor chip. Lower-end models use the A16 Bionic, while higher-end models use the A17 Pro chip. This, combined with the difference in RAM capacity, is why the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models support Apple Intelligence and the remaining models do not.
Based on the unified model number, Apple is expected to use the A18 chip in all four iPhone 16 models launched this year. However, one thing that cannot be determined is whether the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will use the A18 chip version with higher performance or not.
Another change this year is that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will have more RAM, increasing from 6GB to 8GB. There are also rumors that the iPhone 16 will offer a significantly faster Neural Engine.
It's unclear why there are five model identifiers in Apple's leaked backend code. One of them could hint at an upcoming version of the new iPhone SE, but for now that's still just speculation.
