Many users reported that they could not send or receive Messenger messages via their computer browser, while the smartphone application was intermittent since 2 p.m.
Since 2 p.m., many users in Vietnam said they could not use the Messenger messaging service. "I sent a message more than 10 minutes ago, but when I came back later, it was still in sending mode, with an error message in the chat box. Switching to using the phone was also intermittent and very slow," said Thanh Linh (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi), adding that many people in the same office also encountered similar problems.
According to Downdetector, a tool that monitors the status of Internet services, incident reports appeared frequently from around 2 p.m. and increased rapidly to nearly 1,000 by nearly 3 p.m. in many areas around the world, mainly with Messenger while other Meta services such as Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp were not affected.
Member JeaninTN said that using her phone to text sometimes worked, while her computer was completely inaccessible. She also tried using her phone to broadcast Wi-Fi to her computer but was unsuccessful, indicating that the error was not due to the network connection.
By 3:10 p.m., some users in Vietnam were able to text again while new error reports continued to appear on Downdetector.
Mega has been experiencing problems with its social networking services in recent times. The situation where users sometimes cannot send or receive messages for long periods of time has become more common, interspersed with major incidents that paralyze for hours. Most recently, on December 12, 2024, a series of Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp services were inaccessible or intermittent for more than 4 hours.
In March 2024, Meta services were also interrupted for about an hour. A similar error occurred in 2021 when a series of the company's platforms were inaccessible in many global regions, lasting for 6 hours. At that time, Meta said the problem was due to a "configuration error" on the system. In 2019, the web version of Facebook was also offline for 24 hours.
