Nearly a year after being diagnosed with a serious infection that left him blind in his right eye, Elton John has revealed that his condition is affecting his role as a father.
"I can see him, but I can't watch TV, I can't read," the 78-year-old star said in an interview with the Times on April 4 about his vision loss in one eye. "I can't see my boys playing football and soccer. It's a stressful time."
The singer and his partner David Furnish have two children, Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12.
"It's painful, but I have to get used to it, because I'm lucky to have the life I have," the five-time Grammy winner continued. "I still have a wonderful family, and I can still see something in my left eye. And I say to myself, 'Keep going.'"
Three months ago, the British singer joked about losing his sight at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, USA.
"I don't know if you know, but there's a lot of talk about my vision," he said before presenting the award for best original score to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Challengers.
"I just want to reassure everyone that it's not as bad as it looks. I'm so happy to be here with my co-host, Rihanna," the Lion King songwriter joked while standing next to singer Brandi Carlile.
Elton John first revealed his eye infection diagnosis in September 2024. Two months later, he admitted in an interview with Good Morning America that he had lost vision in his right eye.
Born in 1947, Elton John is an English singer, songwriter and pianist. During his career, Elton John has sold more than 300 million albums, won five Grammys, two Oscars, an Emmy and a Tony. Elton was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
The singer has a happy life with his same-sex partner and two children born via surrogacy. Elton John is also a humanitarian, founded a charity to support AIDS victims and participated in many community activities.
