Katy Perry chose the futuristic design to honor the "innovation" theme of the Breakthrough Prize - an award honoring scientist with breakthrough achievements, considered the "Oscar of the scientific world". The dress also represents Katy Perry's desire to reach for the stars and conquer the universe, just a week before her journey into space.
Katy Perry will join five other women on a flight to the edge of space on the New Shepard spacecraft operated by billionaire Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin on April 14. The event will mark the first all-female crew to fly into space since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's solo flight in 1963.
Katy Perry, who has sung about space in songs like E.T., said she has dreamed of traveling to space for more than two decades. Last week, the 40-year-old singer told ELLE magazine that she was excited when Blue Origin announced its commercial space travel service. "I wanted to sign up immediately when I heard that. And when they called me and said it was going to be the first all-female flight, it felt really special," Katy said.
Katy will fly with journalist Gayle King, former NASA engineer Aisha Bowe, Vietnamese American scientist Amanda Nguyen, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, and helicopter pilot Lauren Sánchez. The flight will take off from West Texas, taking the group to an altitude of 65 miles (105 kilometers) for an 11-minute suborbital flight that crosses the Kármán line, the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and space.
The topic of the upcoming flight was also likely to be discussed at the Breakthrough Awards, where Lauren Sánchez and her fiancé, billionaire Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, were both in attendance.
