Nintendo's popular handheld game console has an upgraded version, switch 2, with a larger screen, 4K image support, and increased internal memory capacity.
The biggest change on the Nintendo Switch 2 is the 7.9-inch Full HD screen instead of the 6.2-inch HD screen of the old version. This screen is still LCD technology but has a 120 Hz refresh rate and HDR support. The thickness of the device is similar to the first generation.
As expected, the Joy-Con controllers have moved from a holder to a magnetic attachment that makes them easier to remove and install. The SL and SR buttons are also larger, making them comfortable to hold when combined with a single controller. The joysticks are also larger, and each Joy-Con can be used as a mouse on compatible games.
The Switch 2 dock has a more eye-catching design, integrating two additional USB-C ports. Nintendo also emphasizes 3D audio when using compatible headphones, and the speakers on the console itself will also be much better than the previous generation. Internal storage is increased to 256GB, far exceeding the 32GB on the old model. The Switch 2 dock has a built-in cooling fan and can output 4K images via HDMI with compatible games.
The Switch 2 uses a physical game save card similar to the first-generation Switch. Nintendo says it will load games faster, but users will need to buy a microSD Express card, while regular microSD cards will not be compatible.
The new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller will also have a C button to activate GameChat, and GL and GR buttons on the back that players can assign to any function. The controller also has a headphone jack for connecting external accessories.
When activating the new GameChat feature with the C button, players can chat by voice through the built-in microphone, even when the console is docked. This is the first time a Nintendo system has featured voice chat. In Mario Kart, for example, the feature makes it feel like all players are connected to the same TV even when they are not next to each other.
In addition, the company also introduced the Switch 2 camera that allows video chat. The player's image will be displayed on the screen, shared with friends to play together. These features will require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which is free until March 31, 2026.
Nintendo Switch 2 begins pre-ordering on April 9 and officially hits shelves on June 5 for $ 450 in the US market.
