A newly discovered patent shows that Samsung is developing a quadruple-fold phone.
Samsung is famous for its groundbreaking ideas about screens such as triple-folding, elongating... In early April, technology site Sammobile shared Samsung's patent application for a device with a quadruple-folding screen and three hinges. The company chose a W-shaped inward folding design, which helps protect the screen better.
The device can be used in many ways such as a bar phone, folded in half, folded in three, folded in four, or opened into a large screen of about 12 inches. However, creating this product is very complicated in terms of engineering, when it requires three hinges, while maintaining the tension and durability of the screen evenly.
The image shows the level of completion of the design and the usage scenarios. However, according to PhoneArena, Samsung may not launch such a device soon because the production cost is too high, while there are many challenges to solve such as thinness, folding, etc.
Currently, Huawei's tri-fold smartphone costs about $ 3,000, so the cost of a quad-fold smartphone will be much higher. In addition, the target customer of the quad-fold device is expected to be very small.
