Criminal Dana Martin incited his accomplices to kidnap and kill Justin Bieber in 2012 because he was obsessed with the pop star.
Information related to the case was revealed by police Sergeant Edgar Pinon - a former prison guard in New Mexico - in the Stalking the Stars episode on Investigation Discovery, EW reported. Sergeant recounted the chilling testimony of criminal Dana Martin - while serving a life sentence for rape and murder - about the plan to kill Justin Bieber.
"One morning, he wanted to talk to me privately. He immediately told me about the Justin Bieber tattoo on his body," Sergeant said, adding that Dana detailed the plan to kidnap Justin Bieber and sent two accomplices to the East Coast to carry out the plot.
These two men are Mark Staake, who met Dina Martin in prison, and Tanner Ruane, Staake's nephew. Their plan was to kill a couple in Vermont, then travel to New York to kill Bieber and his bodyguard during a concert at Madison Square Garden.
However, the two were arrested by US border police on November 19, 2012, while crossing back into Vermont after taking the wrong route into Canada. "Their car was searched, and police found hedge clippers and ties. Those were the tools needed to commit the crime," said former officer Sergeant Edgar Pinon.
After being released from the border station, Tanner Ruane called Dina Martin, mentioned "targets," and said he would castrate them with hand-held lawn clippers.
Mark Staake was convicted in 2015 of two counts of attempted first-degree murder and sentenced to nine years in prison. Tanner Ruane was also convicted in 2014 of attempted murder. Meanwhile, Dana Martin was transferred to a maximum-security prison in New Mexico in 2023.
Dina Martin told the court that she wanted to kidnap Justin Bieber just to be famous. "I was just a nobody in prison. I wanted Justin Bieber to know who I was. Is that crazy?" The criminal also said that he used to be a big fan of the Baby singer, sending many letters to the pop star, but received no response, so he was upset.
Pinon said he doesn't think Dana really wanted to kill Justin Bieber because if he did, he wouldn't hear any new songs or news about the pop star anymore. "I think Dana just wanted Bieber to know about her," Pinon said.
The Hollywood Demons episode of Stalking the Stars will air on April 28.
