Google is rolling out a feature that lets AI call stores and businesses on your behalf to get updates.
The feature, which is currently available in Google Search and is starting to roll out in the US, will help users get pricing or availability without having to talk directly over the phone.
Google tested the feature in January, with certain types of businesses like pet care, dry cleaning, and auto repair. When users search for one of these, an option to "Check prices with AI" will appear below the business listing.
Google then asks users to provide additional information, such as the type of pet and the specific breed. The AI will also ask when they need the service done and how they want to receive updates, such as by email or text message. The Verge notes that this feature may be popular with young people, as some studies have shown that many young people are reluctant to make phone calls.
The automated calling feature is built on Duplex - Google's conversational AI launched in 2018. According to Robby Stein, VP of product for Google Search, the tool will introduce itself as an AI trying to collect information on behalf of customers and convey it back so that businesses don't have to spend a lot of time doing this. Business owners can opt out of receiving AI calls in their Google profile settings.
In 2018, Google faced backlash when it announced Duplex, which simulated a human voice to call businesses. Many people were concerned that call recipients would be "tricked" into thinking they were talking to someone else. After the incident, Google adjusted the AI to announce itself as a robot when calling.
In addition to rolling out the automated caller tool, Google is also upgrading AI Mode - a Search feature that allows users to ask complex, multi-part questions through an AI interface - with Gemini 2.5 Pro for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra users. The tech giant said the model excels at programming, math, and advanced reasoning questions.
