Diogo Jota and Rute Cardoso got married in an intimate ceremony in Porto, Portugal, on June 22. They were childhood sweethearts, together since high school, and had three children before getting married.

Just hours before Diogo Jota died, the 28-year-old player and his wife posted a video of their wedding day with the caption: "A day we will never forget".

Shocked by Diogo's sudden passing, Cardoso has not been able to share anything for the past two weeks. The wedding anniversary post is her first since her husband passed away.

Earlier, in the early morning of July 3, Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva died in a traffic accident when their car burst a tire, flipped several times, and caught fire on a highway in northern Spain. At that time, the Liverpool star was driving from Portugal to England. Diogo chose the road and ferry because he had just undergone lung surgery and was advised by doctors not to fly.

The funeral of Diogo Jota and his younger brother was held on July 5 in their hometown of Gondomar, Porto. Family, teammates, and thousands of fans came to see the two brothers off to their final resting place.

Diogo Jota was born in 1996, played 49 times for Portugal, and helped the team defeat Spain in the Nations League final last month. He joined Liverpool in 2020, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups. Diogo's younger brother Andre is also a footballer, playing for Penafiel in the Portuguese second division.

After the accident, Liverpool announced that they would retire the 20 shirt at all levels, from the first team of men, women, and youth academy, in memory of Diogo Jota.
