Samsung will create AI Phone with a 'completely different' design.

Samsung said it is researching to create a device with different hardware than current smartphones, with AI at the center.

Responding to the Australian Financial Review, Mr. TM Roh, President of Samsung's Mobile Experience Division (MX), said that most of the company's current research activities are focused on a new AI Phone. He did not describe details but emphasized it would be "completely different".

Experts say Samsung may change the familiar rectangular design or product size. Mr. TM Roh also revealed that AI phones will be more portable, but it will not necessarily be smaller.

The Galaxy S24 series launched in Seoul in January.

Since the beginning of the year, Samsung has released a series of phones with AI features, but the company avoided calling them AI Phones. The Korean company focused on mentioning the Galaxy AI feature set first integrated on the Galaxy S24 and most recently the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6. Some previous year models such as the S23 series have also been upgraded to be compatible with Galaxy AI.

Generative AI features are gradually becoming popular on smartphones such as live language translation, content summarization, and audio recording. Users can also use it for smart photo editing such as removing objects, adding objects by drawing.

According to the Australian Financial Review, there are currently a number of AI devices on the market, but none have been truly successful. This is why it is difficult to determine how a true AI phone model will look and function. Samsung's decision to invest in research can be considered "risky" in an unexplored "territory". The company is expected to spend a lot of research costs, but it is unlikely that such a device will be released in the near future.
