Lauren Sánchez - girlfriend of billionaire Jeff Bezos - and her team designed a neoprene bodysuit that is fire-resistant for six people flying into space.
On April 14, the all-female crew returned to Earth after an 11-minute space flight on the New Shepard reusable rocket-ship complex, taking off from Blue Origin's facility in West Texas, USA.
The six members of this trip include: Singer Katy Perry, Aisha Bowe - a former Bahamian-American aerospace engineer, Amanda Nguyen - founder and CEO of the NGO Rise, journalist Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, helicopter pilot and MC Lauren Sánchez. According to Space, this is the first all-female crew to fly into space.
Lauren Sánchez burst into tears as her fiancé, billionaire Jeff Bezos, stood at the door of the ship to greet her. In an interview shortly after landing, Lauren Sánchez said emotionally: "I am so proud of my team. I don't know how to describe it. The moment when I looked out the window and saw the moon. And the Earth looked so peaceful. We were all there together. I felt really happy and grateful, and I felt like I wanted to go back and hug everyone."
The MC told Page Six that she collaborated with Monse co-founders Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim to create the outfits for the trip. They started brainstorming ideas in late 2024. Initially, the team didn't know where to start because the reference materials were all men's spacesuits. The billionaire's girlfriend wanted to create a simple, comfortable outfit that was still flattering and sexy, with bold elements like a dirt-racing outfit or a ski suit.
After brainstorming ideas, the three decided on a blue bodysuit made of stretchy, flame-resistant neoprene with functional details like a compression layer, a waist belt, a double front zipper, and a bottom zipper for custom styling.
To ensure the perfect fit, each member's body was 3D scanned. "I think these suits are very elegant, and they bring a little bit of a fresh spin to space," Sánchez said.
Before the flight, Sánchez and Perry said they did a thorough make-up before boarding, applying glamorous makeup with false eyelashes and styling their hair.
Lauren Sánchez, 56, is an Emmy-winning Mexican-born host who has hosted popular shows on KTTV Fox-11, including Good Day LA. She is also an actress, producer, and writer. In September 2024, she published her first space-themed children's book, The Fly Who Flew to Space.
Sánchez rose to fame when she fell in love with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. They went public with their relationship in 2019 after confirming their divorce. The two are said to share similar interests and passions for aviation, charity work, and investing in community organizations.
