Comedian Russell Brand, the ex-husband of singer Katy Perry, has been charged with four counts of sexual assault and will appear in court on May 2.
On April 4, the London Metropolitan Police Department announced that Russell Brand, 50, will appear in court on charges of rape, indecent assault, oral rape and two counts of sexual assault.
The charges relate to four women, who were involved in incidents between 1999 and 2005 in the UK. Police have urged anyone affected to come forward and anyone with information to contact them. Detective Inspector Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police, who is leading the investigation, said victims are being supported by specially trained officers.
Police began investigating Russell Brand in September 2023 after receiving a number of allegations following a report in The Sunday Times and Channel 4's Dispatches programme. At the time, the British actor denied allegations of rape, assault and mental abuse against him. In an Instagram video, he insisted he had never had non-consensual sex.
On Friday, after hearing that he had been charged by the London police, Russell Brand posted a video on X, once again denying the allegations and claiming that the British government was using the law as a weapon against him. "I was a fool before I came into the light of God. I was a drug addict, a sex addict and a fool. But I never raped anyone," Russell said.
According to The Guardian, Russell Brand moved to the US for a while after the allegations. He settled in Florida with his wife, model Laura Gallacher, and their daughter.
Russell was born in 1975 and is a famous actor, author and presenter. He began his career as a stand-up comedian, then appeared in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), Arthur (2011), Rock of Ages (2012), etc. He voiced Dr. Nefario in the 2010 animated film Despicable Me.
