Apple is said to upgrade the iPhone 17 Pro's telephoto lens to 48 megapixels, but the optical zoom will be reduced to 3.5x instead of the current 5x.
According to Majin Bu, who often shares accurate information about Apple's unreleased products, the iPhone 17 Pro is about to get a major upgrade. Specifically, the device will use a new telephoto lens with a 48-megapixel sensor, up from 12 "dots" on the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. However, the optical zoom is 3.5x (85mm) instead of 5x zoom (120mm).
The new focal length is considered suitable for real-life portrait photography, allowing users to compose the frame easily without having to move away from the subject. The 48-megapixel sensor allows for simulating a longer focal length while still ensuring image quality. Apple is doing this with the Fusion main camera on the standard iPhone 16, in which the 48-megapixel sensor allows 2x zoom to create good quality 12-megapixel photos.
Apple is also expected to change the design of the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max with a large rectangular camera cluster. The device returns to using an aluminum shell instead of titanium, the A19 Pro processor chip and RAM increased to 12 GB.
The 2025 iPhone generation is expected to launch in September with 4 versions of the iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. Of which, the iPhone 17 Air is a completely new line with an ultra-thin design, replacing the current Plus model.
