Xiaomi and the controversy surrounding its first electric sports supercar: Ambition or trick?

China - Power-limiting software, carbon-fiber hoods are among the issues that have caused customer complaints about Xiaomi's electric vehicle line.

On the night of May 7, Xiaomi posted an apology to customers for recent changes affecting the SU7 Ultra model. The company clarified the new conditions for unlocking the Ranking Mode feature and the purpose and origin of the dual carbon-fiber hood option. Remedial measures were announced to address user dissatisfaction.

Ranking Mode software controversy

Xiaomi admitted that a recent software update imposed unlocking requirements for the SU7 Ultra's Ranking Mode without prior notice. The feature, originally designed as a high-performance driving mode, was modified without full information, causing negative reactions from users. Xiaomi has paused the software rollout and pledged to release a revised version within 4-8 weeks.

The company acknowledged the communication issues and said that future updates would involve more user consultation. "We recognize that major updates that impact the user experience require careful dialogue with the community," the announcement said.

Carbon fiber hood and customer choice

Xiaomi explained that the carbon fiber hood with two air intakes was added to the SU7 Ultra after the prototype received positive reviews at the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany in October 2024. Although it is mainly an aesthetic feature, the hood helps reduce the weight of the car by 1.3 kg and improves cooling airflow.

Due to misunderstandings about its function, Xiaomi will allow SU7 Ultra customers to switch to the standard aluminum hood. This configuration option is available for orders placed before May 10 or for vehicles that have already been delivered. These customers will also receive 20,000 yuan ($2,770) in loyalty points. Those who keep the carbon fiber hood will still receive loyalty points. Xiaomi notes that the reconfiguration may slow down production but will not affect other terms of purchase.

The carbon fiber hood is produced in a process that takes about 12 hours per unit. Xiaomi emphasizes that the component has passed safety and durability tests, including requirements for noise, vibration, and pedestrian collision. The car is warranted for 5 years or 100,000 km. The company also compared its product to aftermarket alternatives that may not meet the same standards.

Nürburgring Test Drive

On May 8, CEO Lei Jun confirmed that the production version of the SU7 Ultra is currently being tested at the Nürburgring. The car uses a three-motor system that produces 1,526 horsepower, has a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 1.98 seconds and a top speed of 350 km/h. The car is equipped with CATL's Kirin II battery, which provides an estimated range of 630 km and charges from 10% to 80% in about 11 minutes.

Other components include an Akebono braking system, carbon ceramic brake discs, and a fixed carbon rear wing for increased downforce. The use of carbon fiber throughout the car helps reduce the total weight by 57 kg. The car's interior is covered in Alcantara and carbon materials. The car is also equipped with a driver assistance system developed by Xiaomi.
