Facebook adds 'return to original' option.

Facebook adds Friends tab that only shows content from friends, the element that made the social network attractive when it launched.

"Connecting with friends has been a part of Facebook since the day it launched," Meta announced the Friends tab on March 27. "Over the years, Facebook has continuously evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of users, helping them deliver the best experience with tools like Groups, Video, and MarketPlace, but the magic of friends is gone. Things are changing."

New features in the Friends tab.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also said he would bring more of the old Facebook features, called "OG Facebook", this year. "The new Friends tab is the return of OG Facebook, where you'll only see status updates from your friends," he wrote on his personal Facebook account. "There will be more OG Facebooks coming soon. Zuckerberg also posted a short video comparing the new feature to the experience of using the social network on a laptop in 2006.

Instead of "suggested content" as it is now, the Friends tab will only feature content related to friends, including posts, Reels, Stories, birthdays, and friend requests. The feature is rolling out to users in the US and Canada, ahead of a global release in the coming months.

Zuckerberg has previously hinted at a return to the original Facebook. "I'm excited to get back to the OG Facebook," he said in Meta's Q4/2024 financial report in January. "I think we're going to build some great features that shape the future of human connection."

On The Colin and Samir Show podcast that aired on March 27 when the new feature was rolled out, Zuckerberg also said that the Friends tab "represents phase one of bringing the original Facebook back to the original Facebook." again."

"I don't think it's going to be used as much as the main Feed, but people will like the newness. It's going to change the way Facebook is perceived and used," he said. "I think it's an interesting opportunity to rebuild a bunch of things that were fun experiences that people had when they used Facebook, but that no longer exist."
