On the morning of April 21 (local time), Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced on Vatican television that Pope Francis had passed away. After announcing Pope Francis' passing, bells rang in church bell towers across Rome. The day before his death, the Pope appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican before thousands of faithful during Easter Mass on April 20.

Pope Francis is the first Latin American pope, having been ordained in 2013 and is one of the oldest popes in the history of the church.
